SAVCA and KPMG Venture Capital and Private Equity Industry Performance Survey for 2007

The results of the SAVCA and KPMG ‘Venture Capital and Private Equity Industry Performance Survey’ for 2007 concluded that the growth in funds under management has increased by 46% to R87 billion, once again demonstrating that the South African Private Equity industry continues to be viewed as an attractive asset class.

Venture Capital and Private Equity in 2008 Budget

There are two references to South African Venture Capital and Private Equity industry in the 2008 budget, please see page numbers 63 and 70 of the attached for these references (http://www.treasury.gov.za/documents/national%20budget/2008/review/chap4.pdf)
As SAVCA members are aware, SAVCA has been in discussions with National Treasury about regulation and taxation of the industry since early last year. The venture capital tax incentive (Amounting to a 30% up front deduction) is very positive for this section of our industry and SAVCA will obtain more details on this as soon as possible.

SAVCA and unquote” Congress – Cape Town, 7 February 2008

For the first time SAVCA will be holding a congress for the industry. This congress is titled unquote” South Africa Private Equity Congress - “Mapping South Africa’s private equity landscape and charting the course of future growth” and takes place in Cape Town on 7 February 2008. The focus of the congress is to show case South African private equity to local and international investors and on core issues influencing the private equity market, successful competitive strategies and investment potential in the asset class.

SAVCA US Institutional Investor Leaning Journey 28 October to 3 November 2007

SAVCA, the JSE and the U.S. Department of Commerce International Trade Administration hosted 12 US Institutional Investors on a learning journey to Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town. The mission of the Learning Journey was to leave the US investors with a solid view of the growing opportunities for private equity investments, the enabling environment, as well as the legal framework and corporate governance practices adopted in South Africa.

The Full and Associate membership fees for 2008

The Full and Associate membership fees for 2008 will increase by 7% (an inflation related increase). The fees have remained unchanged from 2005 and the fees for full membership are still calculated as a function of the higher of cumulative costs of investments made or funds under management by SAVCA full members

Goldman Sachs gambles on South Africa
